THE GENERAL and GOLDEN SPIKE 

The General was built in December, 1855 in the city of Paterson, New Jersey and  made the journey to Georgia by ship from Philadelphia, then by rail to her home, the yard of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in Atlanta.

The General was in regular service between Atlanta and Chattanooga from early 1856 until she was retired and pulled out of service on May 30, 1891. For more information on the General check out the links below:
